If it has a person with recording capabilities and they&#8217;ve pressed record, I&#8217;m your man. If you emit sounds and then you file those sounds under &#8220;opinions&#8221;, then go ahead and slap a clever title on it; I&#8217;m probably the right guy for you. Comics, music, comedy, whatever, I&#8217;ll take it. But there&#8217;s one that rules them all. The one to beat is <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.earwolf.com\/show\/gelmania\/\">Gelmania<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You ain&#8217;t worth nothing but the money in your pocket and the articles written about you. That&#8217;s where it starts and that&#8217;s where it stops. Don&#8217;t think for a second that you are like me&#8230; [I&#8217;m an artist].&#8221;\u00a0&#8211; <em>Hustle,<\/em>\u00a0<strong>Brett Gelman<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>My main source for this stuff is Earwolf: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.earwolf.com\/show\/how-did-this-get-made\/\">How Did This Get Made?<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.earwolf.com\/show\/who-charted-howard-kremer-and-kulap-vilaysack\/\">Who Carted?<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.earwolf.com\/show\/improv4humans\/\">Improv4Humans<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.earwolf.com\/show\/comedy-bang-bang-podcast\/\">Comedy Bang Bang<\/a>&#8230; they&#8217;ve all provided hundreds of hours of enjoyment.<\/p>\n<p>You know who else makes with the podcasts? <strong>Tucker Stone*<\/strong>. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.factualopinion.com\/the_factual_opinion\/podcast\/\">He&#8217;s knee deep in it and <em>loving<\/em> it.<\/a> I mentioned to Tucker how pathetic I felt when I recently read a couple of 70s horror comic books and immediately felt the need to post about it, a hunger to document and expose this totally quiet and tiny moment of genuine pleasure and make a&#8211; a\u00a0<em>thing<\/em> about it. As if I had to validate my sense of place in the world by appropriating some crappy little images and pumping them into an empty, fleeting beat in time, simultaneously\u00a0failing to absorb true value and\u00a0reflecting cultural emptiness.<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.comics.org\/issue\/30174\/\">House of Mystery #245<\/a><\/em>, September, 1976. There&#8217;s a story called <em>A Talent For Murder\u00a0<\/em>in there. <strong>David V. Reed<\/strong> was hacking it out under the name <strong>Coram Nobis<\/strong>, but artist <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dcindexes.com\/database\/creator-details.php?site=dc&amp;creatorid=1143&amp;type=story&amp;order=date&amp;pub=All\">Leopoldo Duranona<\/a><\/strong> is the clear winner on this one. Wait, the art is better than the writing? In a comic book? WHAT&#8230; a fucking shocker.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/michelfiffe.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/D.Success.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-3334\" title=\"D.Success\" src=\"http:\/\/michelfiffe.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/D.Success.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"583\" height=\"865\" srcset=\"https:\/\/michelfiffe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/D.Success.jpg 648w, https:\/\/michelfiffe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/D.Success-202x300.jpg 202w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 583px) 100vw, 583px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There was another story in that issue that took two writers (one of them a lawyer), but \u00a0it was drawn by\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.alexnino.net\/\">Alex Ni\u00f1o<\/a><\/strong>, which automatically catapults it to greatness.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/michelfiffe.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/D.Ni\u00f1o.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-3335\" title=\"D.Ni\u00f1o\" src=\"http:\/\/michelfiffe.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/D.Ni\u00f1o.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"583\" height=\"881\" srcset=\"https:\/\/michelfiffe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/D.Ni\u00f1o.jpg 648w, https:\/\/michelfiffe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/D.Ni\u00f1o-198x300.jpg 198w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 583px) 100vw, 583px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.comics.org\/issue\/30614\/\">Haunted #31<\/a><\/em>, January, 1977. I do indeed like the late <strong>Tom Sutton<\/strong>. So much so that <a href=\"http:\/\/zegas.tumblr.com\/post\/28029170211\/images-from-diversions-of-the-groovy-kind\">I clipped an interesting bit of history<\/a> from his TCJ interview. His <em><a href=\"http:\/\/corky.net\/dotan\/log\/images\/lost-cities1.jpg\">Planet of the Apes<\/a><\/em> spread is a classic, an unbelievable effort, and I loved his short story in a\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/themattmurdockchronicles.blogspot.com\/search\/label\/thomas%20sutton\">Daredevil<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>annual. But I really like the slapped together experiments he used to write and draw for Charlton. Check this page out&#8230; it&#8217;s like a Trevor Von Eeden pages trying to do 70s Toth, except it&#8217;s between the two. You also like the the more unique low budget attempts in comics? Well, I recently hosted <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/zegas.tumblr.com\/tagged\/Dennis-Fujitake-Week\">Dennis Fujitake Week<\/a><\/strong>, where I wrote a few brief notes and scanned a whole lot of material featuring this amazing, underrated fanzine-artist-turned pro. Like I mention in one of the posts, I&#8217;m so taken by this late 70s era of comic book fandom (which <strong>Fujitake<\/strong> fully represents, I think), and I know it&#8217;s borderline obnoxious to dwell on the past in that fetishistic way, a past I was clearly not a part of, but I can&#8217;t help notice the visceral excitement on these smelly pieces of newsprint. That shit just looked more fun than anything.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/michelfiffe.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/DF.Xmen_.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-3312\" title=\"DF.Xmen\" src=\"http:\/\/michelfiffe.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/DF.Xmen_.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"758\" srcset=\"https:\/\/michelfiffe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/DF.Xmen_.jpg 720w, https:\/\/michelfiffe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/DF.Xmen_-227x300.jpg 227w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 576px) 100vw, 576px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Enough about comics. Here&#8217;s another obsession:\u00a0<strong>Ferrante and Teicher&#8217;s<\/strong> <em>Denizens of the Deep<\/em>\u00a0album, which is the only music on repeat around here. I thought it&#8217;d be easier to find any clips of this rare album online, so I&#8217;ve put up a couple of examples:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/michelfiffe.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/17-Underwater-Reflections.mp3\">Underwater Reflections<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/michelfiffe.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/14-Manatees-And-Dolphins.mp3\">Manatees And Dolphins<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I did find this video which shows the duo masterfully playing and manipulating their pianos to achieve those specific sounds. <strong>Ferrante and Teicher<\/strong> are\u00a0mostly known as schmaltzy lounge composers, but there was a brief period of groundbreaking brilliance that cannot be shared enough.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/D8TxNR07jZ4\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Ah, music. <em>Music!<\/em> I&#8217;ve been fantasizing about playing drums in a band again. I have a very specific sound that I want to help make, though, something out of a TJ Hooker <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/SkWM5jRrQ0c?t=24m30s\">scene change<\/a>, dirty but full of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7FCvVLuzlbc\">chops<\/a>. I want to make music that will make me wish I was\u00a0back in 1980 NYC <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=m66SH6l2ap0\">getting\u00a0<\/a>blown\u00a0somewhere in Time Square. A mid-life crisis can wait, I want this now.
