What is COPRA<\/em>?<\/strong><\/p>\n

COPRA<\/em> is a full color, serialized action comic written, drawn, lettered and colored by me, Michel Fiffe. It started out as a self-published series while the collections are currently being published by Image Comics<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

How do you pronounce it? Your last name, too<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

COPRA: Rhymes with cobra. Fiffe: FEE-feh.<\/p>\n

What’s COPRA<\/em> about,\u00a0anyway? \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

It’s about a group of mercenary misfits thrust into a macro-revenge mission. A pack of desperate weirdo fugitives who sometimes end up in other countries or dimensions, but they always get brutal no matter where they land.<\/p>\n

When did COPRA<\/em> start off?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The very first mention of COPRA<\/em> was in the form of a video teaser<\/a> that went live November 4th, 2012. A few days later, on Nov. 8th, I posted COPRA<\/em> on my\u00a0Etsy store and started selling it then with the promise of fulfilling a monthly 12 issue arc, each issue being 24 pages and ad-free.\u00a0That weekend,\u00a0COPRA<\/em>\u00a0made its public\u00a0debut at the\u00a0Brooklyn Comics and Graphics Festival<\/em>\u00a0on Nov. 10th. I signed &\u00a0numbered the 400 copies I had printed.<\/p>\n

Only 400 copies?<\/strong><\/p>\n

That’s all I could afford to print. (Under my newly-formed Copra Press, where I first began self-publishing ZEGAS<\/em><\/a>.) Plus, I estimated that I would only be able to sell about half of that, while the backlog stocked up. I went back to press a month later when orders kept coming in. That was for another 400 copies.<\/p>\n

That’s still not a lot.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

That’s more than enough for me to manage, pack, and ship off. I’m a one-man operation who\u00a0can be found printing up postage whenever there’s not a page that needs to be inked. Every single copy of COPRA<\/em>\u00a0is directly overseen by me.<\/p>\n

Is that why the older back issues are difficult to find?<\/strong><\/p>\n

That, and the readership has generally held on to them. That’s why\u00a0Bergen Street Press<\/a>\u00a0was an incredible help in keeping these comics available. First\u00a0with the\u00a03-issue Compendiums<\/a>, which served as an immediate solution, but especially with the “Rounds<\/a>“.\u00a0COPRA\u00a0<\/em>#1 has been\u00a0well covered;\u00a0here’s its entire history<\/a>.<\/p>\n

What’s the print run for the Copra Press-published issues?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The first two\u00a0issues were 400 copies (their respective reprints were an additional 400). From issue 3\u00a0to 6, the print run was 600 and I was still signing & numbering them. From issue 7 to 12, it was 800. That was the first major arc, the first batch of comics I promised to complete. After a brief break to work on stuff<\/a>), I returned to COPRA<\/em>\u00a0with 2000 copies of issues 13-16, 1000 copies of 17-25, and 900 copies of 26-28, with the mini-series Copra Versus<\/em> locking in a steady 1000. This is all determined by sales and seasons and availability. As readers discovered and stuck with the\u00a0title digitally or in collected forms, a steady rise in new readers was the reason the single issues held on strong.<\/p>\n

What is COPRA VERSUS<\/em>?<\/strong><\/p>\n

It’s a 5 issue mini series that focuses on various Copra villains that didn’t get the time to shine in the regular series. First issue covers DY DY and the second issue covers A.R.M. (the cyborg bounty hunters from issue #4<\/strong><\/a>). The remaining issues (featuring Los Asesinos from\u00a0#19<\/a><\/strong>, the Ochizon horsemen from #s\u00a011<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0&\u00a012<\/a><\/strong>, and the Vitas crew from\u00a0#1<\/a><\/strong>) were published simultaneously as Giant-Size Copra Versus<\/em><\/a>, released fall 2018.<\/p>\n

What is it with you and single issues?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I think the 24 page comic, as a unit, is the perfect delivery system for this kind of story: serialized cliffhanger adventures with a lot of characters. The limited page count and the space to tell the story in are interesting challenges that only a comic can excel at. It has to be swift but not too brief, it has to give you your money’s worth but not be a slog to get through, it has to entertain and compel. I don’t strictly “write for the trade” — I want every issue of COPRA<\/em> to give you enough to want to come back for more. On a practical level, it’s about as much work as I can do to keep the story alive in the traditional system of American superhero comic books. I also like letter pages, pin-ups, profiles, and cool extras to round out the experience.<\/p>\n

So COPRA<\/em> is still at Image Comics?<\/strong><\/p>\n

In 2019, I moved the entire publishing leg of COPRA<\/em> over to Image so I can concentrate on writing & drawing & fully producing the actual comic book. In 2020, I returned to self-publishing the single issues of COPRA<\/em> while Image continues to publish the collections and the digital issues.<\/p>\n

Say I wanted single issues, where do I get them?<\/strong><\/p>\n

If you want the newest, up-to-date\u00a0COPRA<\/em>\u00a0issues (or any of the collections), contact your local comic book retail outlets and they’ll be able to get it for you no matter what state or country you’re in.<\/p>\n

What about digitally?<\/strong><\/p>\n

All of the older issues, the new issues, and the collections can be read digitally under Image Comics banner over at comiXology<\/a>.<\/p>\n

What was that about collections?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The COPRA Rounds<\/em> were initially\u00a0<\/strong>published by\u00a0Bergen Street Press<\/a>, each\u00a0collecting 6 issues\u00a0of the original series. Image Comics announced on February 22nd, 2019<\/a> that they would be releasing those first five COPRA Rounds<\/em> starting May 2019. Released subsequently, Round Six <\/em><\/a>collects ten issues and Round Seven<\/em><\/a> collects the latest arc, the Copra Versus<\/em> limited series, and much more.\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Occasionally. I’ve recently had a\u00a0couple of packs of vinyl stickers<\/a>…<\/p>\n

In the 2017 subscription cycle, I enclosed copies of the ‘zine Baxter Stock<\/em>, basically the print version of the DC in the 80s<\/em><\/a> blog. I drew the cover for its debut issue.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

I’ve only done one. It was for the #25 Anniversary issue<\/a>. I had 35 copies printed of the same cover sans logo. I signed and numbered this super select batch of copies, fully equipped with a certificate of authenticity.<\/p>\n
